MAKE YOUR OWN COSTUMES

Dilbert: Wear round wire frame glasses.. Wear a white shirt and black dress slacks. Take a red and black stripe tie and using pipe cleaners glue them to the underside of the tie so that it will form the upward bend that Dilbert wears.

A Bag of Jelly Beans: You'll need a clear plastic bag. Step into it making holes for the legs and arms out the side. Fill the bag with different color balloons and use a flashy scarf to tie around the top of the bag. You may want to place a sign that says Jelly Beans 5¢ in front of the bag. For the clothing underneath just about any color leotard will work.

Post-It Note: Cut out two - three foot square pieces of cardboard, glue a yellow large sheet of posterboard to one side of the two boards. Then take a sponge and using a light grey paint, apply a light coating across the top 1/8 of the one board to represent the sticky glue. Then using a magic marker, write a short note on the front ide of the one board. Use string to attach the two sides together to wear.

Sherlock Holmes: Get a brown cape, a vest, white slacks and a magnifying glass, the sleuth hat.

Tacky Man/Woman: Just butt UGLY, mismatched clothes (polyester and patterns are a plus).

Cowboy/Cowgirl: Jeans, western shirt, boots, western hat, neckerchief and bandanna.

Scare Crow: Add patches to jeans and flannel shirts, add straw to cuffs of pants and shirt (duct tape will allow you to attach straw to under side of pants and shirt).

Gypsy: Get a scarf for your hair, a shawl and a puffy blouse with a flowing long flower print skirt.

Betty Rubble:Wear a black wig done "Betty" style, take a blue halter dress and cut the length with a pair of scissors so that the ends are jagged. Wear a bow in your hair. Glue a small rock to the top of the halter dress.

Bam-Bam: Using leopard skin material, cut out a diaper size piece of cloth for the waist. Cut a ragged edge and then use the same material to make a sash for the shoulder. Use a dog's rubber bone for the back. Use hot glue to attach at the rear. Cut a card board circle and glue on a circle of material. Use bobbi-pins to attach to the hair.

Ghosts: Sheets - make sure to cut big holes for eyes.

Mr. Potato Head: Fill a burlap bag with old shirts or rags. Using felt, cut out the eyes, nose and mouth. Attach Velcro to the backs of these items. Use fiber- fill to stuff the parts. Then attach the Velcro backs to the suit. Use black sweat pants or leotard for legs.

Magician: Wear a black tux jacket, black pants, white dress shirt, Top hat and stuffed bunny for your tricks.

1950's Look: Untucked, solid-color button down shirts; jeans rolled up to mid-calf; socks and penny loafers. Girls wear pony tail and boys slick-back ducktail with grease.

Old Man/Women: Old looking clothes, glasses, old shoes, and cane. Use a bulky purse and for that added touch, use baby powder for grey hair. (Use very lightly and apply in an open area, not recommended for people with respritory sensitivities)

Hobo: Large men's pants, large dark sports coat, shirt with patches and a stick with a bandanna. Adults can burn a cork and when charred blow out the cork and then use this charred area for a scruffy look.

Mummy: Take white sheets, tear up into long strips and wrap them around the body.

Mummy2: Wear white, tight fitting (yet warm) clothing under the wrappings. Take a 5 yard role of 3 inch guaze and dip it in weak tea the day before and hang it out to dry. This will be your head wrapping. You will need a 60 yard roll of 1 1/2 inch wide masking tape for your body wrapping. Start with your ankles and work up. Overlap the tape slightly and stop at the knee. Continue right above the knee and go to the top of your thigh. Do both legs. Then start in the middle of your stomach and run it down between your legs, crisscrossing over your hips and between your legs in a diaper fashion. Break off the tape. Just below your hipbones wrap around your body until you get to your underarms. Crisscross over your shoulders to cover your upper chest and back. Start at your shoulder and move down your arm. Stop at the elbow and start again on the other side of your elbow. Do both arms. Now switch to guaze for your head. Tape down the end of the gauze under your collarbone and move upwards to do your neck and your head. Make sure it's not too tight around your neck! Keep your eyes and mouth free. Tape down when you're finished. Rub some dirt on the tape so that you look sufficiently old and moldy. With a black or brown eye pencil circle each eye and smudge out for that hollowed out eye look. Whiten the rest of your face so that it matches your wrappings. This is a very visible costume!

MUMMY3: Wrap yourself in burlap strips. Shred old oversized clothes. Slop paint on leotards and tights or sew strips on a pair of white coveralls.

Rapper: Large jeans, large shirt. Baseball cap worn sideways or backwards.

Animaniacs: Black cotton cap for hair, use pipe cleaners and felt for forming ears which can be glued to hat. Use a small slinky (stretched and wrapped in black felt for the tail. Black pants & shirt, white gloves for hands. Use lip stick for nose, white face paint for face, black face paint for neck. (For Dot, add a red polka-dot skirt and yellow silk flower on hat) (For Wacko, Use a baseball cap turned around (ears will be glued to it) with Blue sweat shirt with the sleeves cut 1/4 length) and (for Yacko, Wear whit pants).

Witch: Black clothes, cape, witch's hat and broom. (Dye an old sheet for the cape).

Football Player: Those who have an older brother or father who played football in high school or college can use their uniform. Use foam inside the helmet to make it fit properly, use the teams sweatshirt underneath. Use black tape under the eyes for that touch of the real game.

Zorro: Black clothing, black hat, mask (for the cape - dye an old sheet black) and a red scarf wrapped around the waist.

I Dream of Jeannie: Use a tube top for the top, and cut off a red vest for the jacket. Use baggy pants that can be dyed pink and an old pair of ballet shoes.

Black-eyed pea: Draw a large black letter "P" on a plain white T-shirt. Use black makeup to make smudges under eyes. You are a black-eyed pea now!

Judge Judy: Use a graduation robe and dye it black. Wear a curly wig and a lace trimmed blouse under.

Nerd: High-water pants (FLOODS), white shirt, bow tie, white socks, black shoes and dark-frame glasses with masking tape around the nose piece. For that extra touch, use a pocket protector.

Hippie: Bell-bottom jeans, long jeans, or peasant dress, love beads (long necklace, bead band, peace button and pink-tinted glasses. Tie-dyed shirt optional.)

Grape Vine: Use a brown body suit and shoes. Cover your body with double sided sticky tape. Then fill up purple balloons and attach the balloons to the double sided tape. You may use a garbage bag tie to attach the balloon to the double sided tape. This is preferred if you are going outside in the wind.

Bunch of Grapes: Dress the child in clothes that match the color of the balloons. Blow up the balloons and with small safety pins attach them all over the body. Make sure you don't restrict either movement or visibility.

Pat (From Saturday Night Live): Get a Western shirt 2 sizes too big. Stuff yourself with rolled up newspaper. Use polyester pants that are brown and 2 sizes too big. For the stuffing on the pants, use multiple layers of foam. Use military style glasses. Black curly wig.

Touched by An Angel, Angel: (Andrew) Wear a white blazer, white pants and white shirt with a black tie. To get the angel effect attach a small portable flashlight to a bent wire hanger that will attach to your back with the wire side out using duct tape and a piece of card board. Aim the light on to the top of your hair. (your an angel).

(Monica) Wear a long straight reddish blonde wig. Use the same hanger technique under a long smaller flowered dress.

(Tess) Use a black curly wig. Spray white spray paint on the top sides of the wig (do outside - adults only.) Use the same technique for a glow. Wear a three piece slacks set with an open jacket. And you are an Angel!

Pippy Long Stocking: Wear a red wig with two pig tails on each side. Using pipe cleaners, wire the inside of the pig tails. Then attach a piece of fishing string to from the end of the pig tail and attach it to the base of the wig with a needle and thread (This will give the trademark Pippy tails.) Then wear a red dress with a flower pattern and a white apron with a fringe on it. Wear hiking boots and color socks and then apply red marker fake freckles.

Traditional Ghost: Get a white sheet and position over body. Mark where eyes need to be cut out and sheet needs to be hemmed. Take off and hem with tape (or staples) and cut out eyes. Cut slits for arms to go through. With a felt pen you can make a ghost face. Tie a loose bow around neck to help the costume stay in place, but not so tight that it won't come undone if you fall down. Make sure the sheet fits so that it
doesn't tangle with busy legs. This is a very visible costume in the dark!

Pirate: Jeans or dark pants rolled up to your knees. Tights or knee socks Boots or shoes. Cut our a homemade buckle out of gold colored cardboard. Large blousy shirt. Long sleeved, looses and brightly colored or white. Sash or belt. You can use a gaudy necktie or a brightly colored scarf. If you have a belt with a big metal buckle all the better. Eye patch. Use thin black or painted black cardboard. Tie it on your head with around 2 /12 feet of string. Bandana. Any old red or blue or multi colored banada will work. Fold it diagonally to form a triangle. Place on your head so the triangle covers the top of your head, and tie in back. Vest. Any color, any design. Earing. Pirates often wear one hoop earing. If the clip on kind hurt your ears, then tie a loop of string through the earing and put it over your ear. Makeup ideas: Heavy eyebrows, mustache, scar, skull & crossbones tattoo.
Props: Cardboard dagger stuck in your sash. (Never use a real knife.) Cardboard hook. If you are
wearing a long-sleeved shirt you can pull the sleeve over your hand and just hold the end of the hook with your hand. If you are holding a hook you need an easily accessible trick or treat bag. Try using a paper bag with a string handle that you can put over your head and one arm. Parrot. What's a Pirate without a parrot? If you have a light weight stuffed parrot you can either sew or pin the parrot to your shoulder.

Garbage Bag: Cut holes in the bottom of a large plastic garabage bag and slip on child. Cut holes for the arms. Fill up the bag with loosely crumpled newspaper. Tape bag around neck.

Lady: Mother's old dress gathered at waist with a big ribbon or fancy belt. Temporarily hem bottom or
sleeves with tape. Use a big hat with flowers or feathers that doesn't obstruct vision. Use lots of
costume jewelery and adult makeup. You can also use fancy gloves, nail polish, a shawl, and a purse. Dont choose shoes that are awkward to walk in. A splash of perfume finishes the job.

WICKED WITCH: Use a black choir robe or old black dress from Salvation Army Thrift Store. You can buy black satin and make a caftan.

WOLFMAN: Slash up old clothes to wear. Get some brown fur and cut it up and glue it on hands and neck.

QUASIMODO: Cut up burlap to make simple tunic or use old bathrobe. Use old clothes from thrift or second-hand store.

GORILLA: Use an old black fur coat as a base. Cut up black upholstery for accents. Use black gloves for hands.

COUNT DRACULA: Make a cape out of one square yard of black satin. Use an old black suit for the clothes. Make a white vest from a bed sheet.

ALL SPACE ALIENS: Use turtle neck sweaters with tight pants. Use old bathrobes. Drape yourself in a tie-dyed bed sheet. Glue sequins and felt designs on old suits with Elmer's glue.

DEVIL: Use red clothes or red tights and leotard or robe. Use red body paint.

AUTOPSY: Tear up old clothes and splatter red paint on them.

CREATURE FROM THE LAGOON: Use green leotards or a wet suit or green body paint.

OLD MAN OR WOMAN: Use old clothes. A man can use a black coat and cane. A woman can use an old long dress.

FRANKENSTEIN: Use an old green coat and black pants. Slash up the coat with a razor blade and slap red paint on it.

CONE HEAD: Use pajamas or regular clothes. Make a cape from a material remnant.

ROBOT: Wrap yourself with tinfoil. Get an old set of coveralls and spray them silver.

SKELETON: Use an old black coat or choir robe with a hood.

MOLE CREATURE: Use an old black coat, sling mud or brown and black paint on it.

GARGOYLE: Use an old fur coat. Buy some plastic chains and sew on the suit.

DEMON: Use a green body suit or bathrobe. Buy two yards of green felt and glue on strips.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: Wear a black suit with a cape. Be sure to scar up your hands.

Clown Make-up

13.Dress in Costume, wig, & hat.
* Some Clowns Splash face with cold water and gently dry their face with a soft towel after the
last powder to make face color brighter.

Recipe 1: Face Make-Up

1 tsp. fuller's earth (available from drugstore)
1 tsp. plain yogurt
1 tsp. water
A few drops of food coloring

Lightly apply to face, avoiding areas around mouth and eyes. (Use lipstick and/or
eyeshadow for these areas.) Make-up will wash off with water.

Recipe 2: Body Paints

2 c non-irritating baby shampoo
Powdered tempera paints

Divide the shampoo into two or more portions (depending on how many different colors
you want). Stir in tempera paint. Children can smoothe this on their bodies, lathering to
make shapes and designs. It comes off easily by running through the sprinklers or
showering.

Recipe 3: Face Paints

6 tsp. corn starch
3 tsp. water
3 tsp. cold cream
Food coloring
six-cup muffin tin

In each cup of the muffin tin, put 1 teaspoon of cornstarch and 1/2 teaspoon each of cold
cream and water. Add a different color of food coloring to each cup. Mix well.

REMOVING MAKEUP

Always use Vegetable Oils Cooking Oil to remove make-up. Mineral oils may remove Vitamin D and
cause skin damage.

TIP: Fill an old gym sock with baby powder for powdering clown make-up. Keep it
stored in a ziplock bag.
