Chapter 4
Hit the Trail!
Hiking the Magical
Terrain of Point Reyes
The greater Point Reyes area offers
you trails in all kinds of environments: sea coast,
open meadows, chaparral, dense woodland and pasture
lands. All kinds of terrain are here too: gentle walks,
switchback trails through the canyons, and trails along
the beachside cliffs. It is extraordinary for such a
small area to encompass such a richly varied landscape.
You can even traverse all of these environments on the
same hike in Point Reyes.
The choices and combinations are many.
I do not attempt a complete chronicling here of all
the hiking trails in the Point Reyes area, only those
that I think are especially suited for a particular
age or mode of getting around. Truth to tell: every
one of the trails in Point Reyes is beautiful and fascinating
if you only have your eves open.
WHEELCHAIR
ACCESSIBLE
& REST STOP TRAILS
Because Point Reyes is considered a
wilderness park, it has been spared many of the so-called
"improvements" of more developed parks in
he country. However, this sometimes presents difficulties
for the elderly or people in wheelchairs, so my first
collection of trails will be for them.
